THE DOUBLE TAKE MOMENTS OF 2008

WHO PUNCHES THE WATCHER?
(Hulk #4)
Not a "What If?" or imaginary tale! For a supposedly omnipotent being that allegedly witnesses everything that happens in the Marvel U, the Watcher should have seen this coming. But poor Uatu is just as surprised as readers when the Red Hulk launches off the surface of the Earth, lands on the moon, and delivers a blow so brutal to the Watcher's big, bald supposedly "all-knowing" head, the cosmic being is K.O.'d enough to leave his galactic nethers vunerable to wisecracks. Then again, isn't that what peeping Tom's deserve?

TURTLE POWER!
(Countdown #2)
After Countdown's countless panels of probing, pumping and general Jimmy Olsen abuse, the tables finally turn when DC's whipping boy transforms into a giant, Speedo-wearing turtle monster form unseen since Kirby's days. Is this any way to treat Superman's pal?

ALSO A MEMBER
(War Heroes #2)
After a soldier loses his pants during a training exercise in Mark Millar's war comic, this army of one-eye put our expectations on a curve—mostly to the left—in terms of shock value. We'd delve deeper into this perplexing peter problem, but the bosses are already miffed we let the mouse out of the house.

ZUR-ENN-ARRH YOU SURE YOU WANNA DO THAT?
(Batman #680)
Decades of training, a never-ending arsenal and an army of operatives at his beck and call—so what does Batman do when the Black Glove tries to drive him insane? He patches together all the urine- and blood-soaked hobo-rags he can find and cloaks himself as the invulnerable Batman of Zur-Enn-Arrh! (And to answer your question: Yes, it's cool and no, we don't understand it either.)

REDHEADED STEP-CHILD
(Red Sonja #32)
A super-pregnancy usually involves the Fantastic Four, a world-ending crisis and a complete retcon a few years later. But when an evil, alternate universe Red Sonja forces herself on a hell-prince to spawn a loin-tearing demon that would throw Rosemary into a post-partum panic, she rips its head off and strangles her traitorous crony with its unholy umbilical cord!

WHO LET THE DOGS OUT?
(Superman #680, Teen Titans #62)
When man's best friend becomes a weapon of mass destruction, it's time to adopt a cat. Just look at the chaos (and caption narrative) Krypto unleashes on Metropolis during his battle with Atlas, or the demonic "Wonder Dog" using tech guru Marvin as a chew toy in Teen Titans. This brand of reverse animal cruelty makes us wonder what Streaky's up to.
