'MARVELS: EYE OF THE CAMERA' Q&A WITH TOM BREVOORT

The Marvel editor talks about the new mini penned by Kurt Busiek

It was no less than five years ago that a Marvels sequel was announced for 2004—the tenth anniversary of its predecessor. When it came time to pump out Marvels: Eye of the Camera, no one wanted to sacrifice quality just to enable a stable release schedule.
'MARVELS: EYE OF THE CAMERA' Q&A WITH TOM BREVOORT "We started working on this project in 2002, foolishly intending for it to be released on the tenth anniversary of Marvels, but that very quickly proved to be a pipe dream—and from then on, nobody wanted to compromise on the quality of the series," Editor Tom Brevoort explained to Marvel.com.

Now, as artist Jay Anacleto puts the finishing touches on issue #5, the six-issue series written by Marvels scribe Kurt Busiek is ready this December to pick up where it left off. The book will continue following everyman Phil Sheldon through his ground floor yet birds-eye view of Marvel history. Brevoort laid down what no-nonsense news he could of the much-awaited title.

WIZARD: Eye of the Camera had originally been planned for around five years ago, correct?
TOM BREVOORT: Yeah.

What allowed you guys to be able to do it now?
BREVOORT: We finally go most of it finished.

So it's just been a work in progress these past years?
BREVOORT: Yes. It's been slowly being worked on all this time. We didn't stop and start, we just didn't do a lot quickly.

Still the same story you guys had planned?
BREVOORT: Yeah. You could almost go back and reprint the article from five years ago.

How many years after Marvels will this story take place?
BREVOORT: That's a funky question, in that Marvel time works differently than real time, but the bulk of the story will take place against the comics of the '70s and '80s, with some call-backs to stuff that happened earlier in the '60s and so forth, that got skipped over in the original Marvel series.

Can you reveal any new characters (ones we didn't see in Marvels) that'll be popping up in this sequel?
BREVOORT: You'll pretty much see everybody who was around in the '70s and '80s. So, the first appearance of the Punisher in Manhattan, the rise of the monster characters like Man-Thing and Ghost Rider and Werewolf by Night...Secret Wars 2, the fall of the mutants and the X-Men's death in Dallas, and Electra, the Frank Miller Daredevil stuff—it's all that period of time, and of course, all the same characters doing what they were doing, so divorce proceedings between Reed and Sue, and Captain America going to prison, all the stuff that happened with those characters as well forms the backdrop of this story.

So the series is completely done and it'll be coming out regularly?
BREVOORT: Oh, I wouldn't say it's completely done. We think, or we hope it'll all be able to come out on time. Jay's in the middle of a fifth issue at this point.
