[WWC] MARVEL'S 'WHAT IF...?' RETURNS IN 2008!

Wizard chats with the Marvel editors behind the return of the alternate reality series!

With the announcement yesterday at Wizard World Chicago that Marvel's What If…? Series is making a triumphant return later this year, Wizard caught up with mighty Marvel editors Justin Gabrie, Nate Cosby, and Mark Paniccia to get the 411 on the alternative goodness in store for fandom!

[WWC] MARVEL'S 'WHAT IF...?' RETURNS IN 2008!WIZARD: What kinds of stories are you going to be featuring?

NATE COSBY: I got World War Hulk.

MARK PANICCIA: Fallen Son for me.

JUSTIN GABRIE: I've got four this year. They are House of M, Spider-Man: Back in Black, and Secret Wars. There is also a back up that continues throughout all five What Ifs where we answer the question, "What If the Runaways became the Young Avengers?"

Who are the writers and artists?

PANICCIA: Fallen Son is the story that answers the question, "What if Iron Man had died instead of Captain America?" Writer Marc Sumerak turned in a script that I thought was amazing and poignant and approached it in a way I didn't expect. We've got artist Trevor Goring on pencils and inks.

COSBY: What if Bruce Banner won World War Hulk? It's epic. In this story, computer-generated Hulk turns into the bad guy from the "Italian Job" remake, and uses his big brain to beat the guy from "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang," and the fat jockey from "Seabiscuit," and other people that we haven't cast yet. Then in the back, MINI MARVELS! Sandwiches were eaten and Hulk was shot into space during Round Trip in the pages of World War Hulk: World Breaker! Then, in Rally the Troops, featured in World War Hulk: Aftersmash, Sentry started sending chain emails! And NOW! It's going to be whatever Giarrusso thinks up two weeks before we've got to send the book to the printer. It'll be funny. Probably.

GABRIE: House of M: "What If Scarlet Witch said "No More Powers?"" Forget Decimation! This affects everyone in the Marvel Universe, not just mutant-kind. Nature abhors a void, so who steps up to fill that void? If you don't have great power, do you still have great responsibility? These are the questions that co-writers Brian Reed and Jim McCann will try to answer for you.

Spider-Man: Back in Black: "What If Mary Jane was shot instead of Aunt May?" When MJ dies, the Spidey/Kingpin throw down gets nasty. Kingpin may have been Daredevil's arch-nemesis for many years, but he did start out as a Spider-Man villain. So in conclusion, let's just say this is a fitting end to that relationship. My thoughts after reading the final script by Steven Grant (Punisher)… it will not disappoint.

Secret Wars: "What If Doom kept the Beyonder's Power?" Absolute power corrupts absolutely, but in Doom's case that's a far gone conclusion as he goes toe-to-toe with some of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe. C'mon, you know you want to read it. This one is written by Emma Frost and Muties scribe Karl Bollers.

"What If the Runaways became the Young Avengers?" The five-part back-up feature illustrates what would've happened if Iron Lad never finds out about the Avengers Fail-Safe Program. Instead, he recruits the Runaways, forcing them to be an actual super-hero team with costumes. Lots of twists and turns with some cool bad guys to boot that will tickle fans of either series. It's written by C.B. Cebulski with art by Patrick "SPAZ" Spaziante. Most of you will be in for a real treat with Spaz's work, who has been one of the most requested artists on "Sonic The Hedgehog" for the last decade. If you dig his funny animal stuff, wait ‘til you see his take on the super hero genre.

What can fans of the previous series look forward to in this title?

GABRIE: Good stories with a twist on familiar events.

Is there anything else that you'd like us to know?

COSBY: Well, I had to get money to pay Chris Giarrusso to draw the end of his Mini Marvel Hulk Haiku Trilogy. So I asked Greg Pak, "Hey, I've got a Mini Marvels story I need to do. Could you fill in the other 35 pages?" And he said yes. That Greggers is a pip, I tell ya.
