Q&A: VICTOR GISCHLER ON 'PUNISHER' MAX

Wizard grabs some time with the new scribe on his first foray into comics and writing Marvel's meanest hero

WIZARD: How does it feel to have your first Punisher One-Shot come out this week?
GISCHLER: I'm excited. It's my first foray into comics writing. Axel Alonso kind of guided me through it, made sure I stayed on the right track with the character and I'm really stoked. I've gotten such good feedback from him.  I hope readers like it and I'm just kind of biting my nails a little bit—I'm just hoping it goes over.
Q&A: VICTOR GISCHLER ON 'PUNISHER' MAXWhat do you think about writing such an iconic character like the Punisher?
GISCHLER: Marvel Comics is the big leagues. I just feel extremely fortunate. I grew up reading Marvel Comics and now I'm writing for Marvel Comics. It's hard to describe how very cool that is. I tell people that I write a novel, [they say], "Oh that's great, good for you," and I tell people oh I write for Marvel Comics, [they say], "Really? That's awesome! What did you write?"  [There are people in my life] who I've never gotten respect from suddenly giving me respect because I'm writing for Punisher, and it's very cool. I hope I can keep earning that respect by doing a good job.

With Garth Ennis stepping down from the title, are you nervous about filling his shoes?
GISCHLER: You know, I didn't think anything about it because I just kept working with Axel. He kept saying, "Okay here's the kind of thing Punisher would do, here's the kind of thing Frank Castle wouldn't do," and I let him guide me and felt really comfortable. When the news came out that Garth Ennis was stepping down and other people are going to take over, it was only then that I started getting nervous. I'm following in some big footsteps here.  I'm glad I didn't think about it before I wrote the one-shot because I might have gotten so nervous that I might have screwed myself up, but it was after I had already written it that I got nervous.

Do you have any future plans in comic books?
GISCHLER: After the one shot, I have the arc coming out later on. I'm always talking with Axel about other possible projects and nothing's for sure yet, but I certainly would like to do more. I'm interested in it and I enjoy what I've done so far. I'm still a rookie. I don't feel like I'm a rookie writer, I feel like I'm bringing some writing skills from my short story and novel writing, but specifically for comic books, I feel like a rookie. I want to learn to do it the best that I can and keep doing it if readers want it. If Marvel or other places want me to keep doing it, then I definitely want to keep doing it if I can.

Anything else that you want to add?
GISCHLER: I'm excited about it! I've got a local comic book shop here in Baton Rouge: School of Comics. I'm going to go down there and buy my own comic book when it comes out and hold it in my hands and think, "Wow!" So I'm just completely happy about it, and I hope other opportunities come up so that I can live up to the challenge.
