[WWPhilly] 'DCU: CRISIS NOW' PANEL REPORT

Publisher builds buzz on slate of current projects

The DCU: Crisis Now panel focused more on current events than breaking news Saturday at day two of the Wizard World Philadelphia convention at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.
[WWPhilly] 'DCU: CRISIS NOW' PANEL REPORT"We're trying to play up big, event style stories that impact the DCU," said DC's VP-Editorial Dan DiDio of the books profiled, "but keep things individual and let people enjoy the stories without worrying about how they interact."

Hosted by DiDio and featuring DC Story Editor Ian Sattler and creators Jimmy Palmiotti, Jim Calafiore, Ethan Van Sciver, Shane Davis, Art Baltazar and Franco, the Crisis Now panel ran down the current slate of DC offerings, starting with the recently released Final Crisis and included quick looks at a host of other series:

* Trinity by Kurt Busiek, Mark Bagley and Fabian Nicieza, which will focus on DC's Big Three: Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. DiDio promised that the focus of the series will be on those three icons, but "shakes them up and does something different with the weekly format."

* Reign in Hell from Keith Giffen, Matt Clark and Steven Segovia, of which Shane Davis noted, "Keith Giffen's vision of hell is like H.R. Giger on acid."

* Batgirl by Adam Beechen and Jim Calafiore, which the artist described as, "Batgirl's grounded at Wayne Manor and kept out of superhero action, but of course, she can't help herself. She's got issues with her dad Cain, and there's a new character introduced, who's a relative."

* Jonah Hex by Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti, who teased that Jordi Bernet, Darwyn Cooke and J.H. Williams will all be providing art in upcoming issues, and that a multi-part story could be in the works shortly.

The rest of the panel briefly touched on a bunch of other titles, including Superman/Batman, Rann/Thanagar: Holy War, Batman's "R.I.P." storyline, Green Lantern, Action Comics, Titans, JSA, JLA and Power Girl, which Palmiotti noted about its buxom lead, "It's going to be BIG," "It's in-your-face action," and "There's TWO things that make it a must-read."

Some of the panel's highlights included DiDio asking a couple of fans to recap recent plotlines in Batman, Action Comics and Green Lantern, and two particular questions during DiDio's lightning round yes-or-no Q&A session: "Is Damian really Batman's son?" which he neatly sidestepped and "Is Barry Allen really coming back?" which elicited a big round of applause and a resounding "Yes," from DiDio. Stay tuned for more in the pages of Final Crisis to see if his pronouncement comes true.
