THE INCREDIBLE HULK'S TEN BEST BRAWLS

The Green Goliath's best brawls, bashes and bouts counted down!
By Ethan Kaye
Posted 05/27/08
THE INCREDIBLE HULK'S TEN BEST BRAWLSFor over 40 years, Bruce Banner's green-skinned alter ego has punched, smashed, crushed, pummeled and squished his enemies into submission. With his new film The Incredible Hulk coming out June 13th, ol' Green Genes will beat on the Abomination, so what better time to count down the punchiest, smashiest, crushiest, pummel-iest and squishiest Hulk battles of all time?!

10. HULK VS. DOC SAMSON
(Incredible Hulk V1 #317)
Both Hulk and Doc Samson are gamma-powered superheroes, one with green skin and the other with green hair. In this battle Hulk pounds Samson into the ground with a boulder like he's planting a railroad spike! But Samson recovers to beat the Hulk into submission. Hulk get smashed!

9. HULK VS. THOR
(The Incredible Hulk Returns, 1988)
Finally, Lou Ferrigno actually got a chance to tussle with someone in his own weight class! This TV movie had Hulk rumbling with another Marvel character—the Mighty Thor—and the fight between the two titans stepped up the action from the show's usual mayhem, which generally involved chucking dudes around and throwing junk. Hulk even gets a hammer to the face!

8. HULK VS. SUPERMAN
(Incredible Hulk vs. Superman #1)
Fans of both heroes walked away happy from this 1999 crossover battle! One story sets the Hulk up as the winner while a later story clearly shows Superman ahead. In true crossover fashion, the heroes realize that Lex Luthor's been playing them the whole time and team-up to defeat him—by tossing the Hulk at Luthor's gamma ray weapon! So, Marvel and DC, where's the sequel?

7. HULK VS. THING
(Fantastic Four V1 #25-26)
Sure, they first met up in Fantastic Four #12, but the main event rang in 13 issues later when the Hulk and the Thing really got into it. And who won? Hulk, of course, this is his countdown. The Hulk's old teammates the Avengers were even called in to put him down, but Hulk took them all on. Luckily, Rick Jones showed up, gave a few kind '60s words of love and the Hulk turned back into Bruce Banner. Ah love, what can't you do?

6. HULK VS. MAESTRO
(Future Imperfect #1-2)
Can the Hulk fight...himself? Apparently he can do better than just fight—he can win! When the Hulk is sent to the future, he discovers his tyrannical future self has taken over the world and changed his name to Maestro. The battle may have only lasted two issues, but the impact was definitely felt on the Marvel Universe. Maestro even got a Marvel Legends figure!

5. HULK VS. HULK DOGS
(Hulk, 2003)
The main villain battle in Ang Lee's Hulk let us down—Absorbing Man could have been much cooler. Luckily, Lee served up a battle appetizer of Hulk wailing on some gamma puppies, popping many of them in the process, including a mutant poodle, to the joy of poodle haters everywhere.

4. HULK VS. DR. STRANGE
(World War Hulk #4)
When Doctor Strange attempts to calm the rampaging Hulk during his assault on New York in World War Hulk, the Hulk hits Strange where it hurts by crushing the Sorcerer Supreme's hands into putty. Even though Strange merges with the extradimensional demon Zom to take on the Hulk punch for punch, the rage inside Hulk allows him to utterly demolish his former Defenders teammate. Someone tell Nighthawk the reunion's postponed!

3. ULTIMATE HULK VS. WOLVERINE
(Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk #1-2)
We know, we know, the book's still going and we don't know how the last four issues of the series will play out, but any title where Hulk rips Wolverine in half definitely makes the list. Especially if that character is considered the best he is at what he does! But if Wolverine can pull himself back together, there's definitely some mayhem to be had in the future.

2. HULK VS. RED KING
(Incredible Hulk V2 #102)
This was the battle that made Hulk king! Trapped on the planet Sakaar through the machinations of Earth's Illuminati, Hulk was forced to fight in the gladiatorial ring by the planet's evil ruler, the Red King. Uniting the warriors into the Warbound team, Hulk rose up against the Red King and had him killed, freeing the planet and becoming the new ruler. Sadly, the ship that brought him to Sakaar exploded, causing a Hulk rage like none other leading to World War Hulk.

1. ULTIMATE HULK VS. THE ULTIMATES
(Ultimates V1 #1-6)
Freddie Prinze Jr., you make everyone jealous! First you marry Sara Michelle Gellar in real life, then date Betty Ross in the Ultimate universe! Hulk snap! Hulk smash pretty boy from Scooby Doo! The Ultimates band together to stop the Hulk's rage, but the fact still remains: Freddie Prinze Jr. is now responsible for the deaths of over 800 people in Manhattan. Think about that the next time you watch She's All That, why dontcha.
