This Week: Jack goes under the knife, gets his freak on and gets a visit from a ghost!
By Josh Wigler
Posted 5/02/2008
EDITOR'S NOTE: In case you hadn't heard, loads of crazy stuff happens on this Lost show all the time. So, relating it to you lovely reader folks is going to contain spoilers...many spoilers...more spoilers than grains of sand on a beach, on an island...I think you get the point! WARNING! SPOILERS AHEAD!

PREVIOUSLY ON LOST...
Attack of the Freighters! Keamy leads a small army into New Otherton and kills almost every extra ever on Lost, as well as Ben's daughter Alex. Ben gets a wee bit touchy over this and summons his old pal Smokezilla to dispatch of the intruders. He then goes off with Locke and Hurley in search of the mysterious Jacob, while Sawyer leads Claire, Aaron and Miles back to the beach. At the beach, the dead body of the freighter's doctor washes ashore. When Jack and company get in touch with the boat, they are informed that the doctor is alive and well. And in the future, Benjamin Linus mysteriously appears in Tunisia, later arrives in Iraq, helps Sayid Jarrah assassinate his wife's murderer and solemnly swears to kill Charles Widmore's daughter Penny... just another day in the life of an Other.

THIS WEEK:
['LOST' ROUND-UP] THE 'LOST' REPORT

"SOMETHING NICE BACK HOME"

Now...
A sickly Jack Shephard awakens in his tent at the sound of Juliet's voice. He goes outside and finds Bernard and Daniel in the middle of a nerd fight about the satellite phone. Jack insists that everything is okay since they'll be rescued soon. His words are instantly contradicted when he drops to the floor. That's reassuring.

Sawyer, Claire, Aaron and Miles are in the jungle when Miles has one of his trippy paranormal freak-outs. He digs around a bit and uncovers the decaying bodies of Rousseau and Karl. Miles tweaks out: "I didn't sign up for this!" Claire, understandably nauseated by the Crazy French Corpse, asks if they can leave. Sawyer, also not into dead chicks, agrees.

Back at the beach, Juliet asks if she can examine Jack. She rubs his sweet, sweet abs for a hot minute and declares that his appendix needs to be removed. (If only Wizard employees were covered under Dr. Juliet Burke's health plan!) Juliet sends Sun and Jin to retrieve medical supplies from The Staff Station, and Daniel and Charlotte ask to tag along. Juliet instructs Jin to shoot them if they cause trouble.

Meanwhile, Claire is feeding Aaron as Miles watches from a distance. Sawyer tells Miles to back off unless he wants a boot in his face. Miles, still ridding the taste of grenade from his mouth, complies.

Later, Jack demands to be kept conscious throughout the surgery so he can make sure nothing goes wrong. Juliet and Lost fans around the world collectively realize that Jack is officially hardcore.

Jin, Sun and the freighter freaks arrive at the medical station. Daniel goes all batty-eyed for Charlotte, and the Kwons make fun of him in their super secret language. When Charlotte smiles at one of their jokes, Jin realizes that she speaks Korean.
As Sawyer and pals continue their jungle safari, Frank Lapidus shows up warns them to hide because Keamy is en route. Keamy shows up with his wounded squad and Frank leads them off towards the helicoptor. Our heroes avoid discovery, despite Aaron's babbling (which, in baby speak, means "Get me off this freaking island!")

At the beach, Jin tells Charlotte that he knows she speaks Korean. He warns her that he'll hurt Daniel if she doesn't help get Sun off the island. Charlotte agrees to his terms.

Juliet begins to operate on Jack. Kate holds a mirror which Jack uses to guide Juliet through the surgery. The anasthesia begins to wear off and Jack writhes in pain. Bernard, continuing his MacGuyver streak, knocks him out.

In the jungle, Sawyer and the gang are asleep. Claire wakes up and, in a classic WTF moment, sees Christian Shephard holding baby Aaron.

The surgery is a success, which is hardly a surprise since [MONDO SPOILER ALERT] Jack is clearly alive in the future. Juliet confesses to Kate that she shared a kiss with Jack in the jungle a few days earlier, but admits that Jack wasn't totally feeling it. "He was trying to prove that he doesn't love someone else," she says. Kate, appreciative of the news, leaves the tent. A dejected Juliet informs Jack that she knows that he's awake and eavesdropping. Rather than playing dead, which he definitely could've gotten away with, Jack caves and opens his eyes. Cue awkward shuffle out of the room.

Sawyer wakes up in the morning and finds that Claire and her baby are missing. He runs off into the woods and finds Aaron abandoned in a bush. Guess Claire is in for some father-daughter bonding time...

...and Later
In the future, Jack wakes up to a phone call confirming an appointment. He goes into the bathroom and starts to shave. Suddenly, Kate emerges from the shower. The two kiss passionately and Jack realizes how awesome the future is without Sawyer.

Jack reads a passage from Alice in Wonderland to a sleeping Aaron. Kate tells Jack that he's a natural. Jack says he got it from his father, who was a good storyteller. Jack and Kate agree that they're very happy, yadda yadda yadda, and it's off to the bedroom.
At his office, Jack thinks he sees his father, but decides that he's seeing things. He later visits Hurley at the mental hospital, where Hugo tells him that the Oceanic Six are really dead and never made it off the island. He says that Jack living with Kate and taking care of Aaron is too perfect, just like heaven. He then says that Charlie has been visiting him, and has a message for Jack: "You're not supposed to raise him." Further, Charlie warns that Jack will be getting a visit "very soon."

Moved by his visit with Hurley, Jack goes home to Kate, they cry a lot, yadda yadda yadda, they're engaged!

Later, Jack is at the office after hours when he hears the smoke alarm going off. He disables the device and is further alarmed when someone shouts "Jack!"... it's Christian Shephard. The apparition disappears when another doctor shows up. Jack, beginning to lose his mind, asks the doctor to write him a prescription for his continuing stress. Back home, Jack overhears Kate talking on the phone. He gets suspicious that she's planning something. When Kate heads to bed, Jack pops some pills and chugs a beer. And that, ladies and gents, is how real men party.

A few nights pass. Kate is surprised to see Jack back at home since he should be at work. He demands to know where she's been. She admits that she was doing something for Sawyer. "I made him a promise. It has nothing to do with us," she says. Jack angrily reminds her that Sawyer chose to stay on the island. She tells him that he can't act this way around her son, to which Jack reminds her that she's not even related to Aaron, who happens to be standing within earshot of the argument. Good thing he survived a plane crash and several hostile kidnappings, or else this news would prove traumatic. Jack leaves, Kate cries, yadda yadda yadda, and that's how Jack became a pill popping alcoholic.

EASTER EGGS AND HINTS

4 8 15 16 23 42 After last week's number-crunching love fiesta, this week was a bit of a letdown. To our count, the numbers only appeared twice. While on the phone with Noreen, Kate says that Jack is never home before 8:00 ("8"). Later, Jack mentions that Aaron's babysitter only works until 4:00 PM ("4"). Next week should be more numbers-friendly with Hurley back in the spotlight.

Those Damn Yankees In the opening flash-forward scene, Jack picks up a newspaper with a headline: "Yankees Bludgeon Red Sox in Series Sweep." Savvy sports fans know that this occurred on two different occasions in August 2006 and August 2007. Lost fans with good eyesight and high definition television can read several details of the newspaper, which reveals that this game was played on August 31, 2007. We can therefore conclude that almost three years have passed since Oceanic 815 crashed on the island.
Through the Looking Glass The Lost writers love to infuse classic literature in the show and this episode was no exception. Jack reads from the second chapter of Alice in Wonderland to young Aaron as he falls asleep. The full excerpt is as follows:
Alice took up the fan and gloves, and, as the hall was very hot, she kept fanning herself all the time she went on talking: "Dear, dear! How queer everything is today! And yesterday things went on just as usual. I wonder if I've been changed in the night? Let me think: was I the same when I got up this morning? I almost think I can remember feeling a little different. But if I'm not the same, the next question is, Who in the world am I? Ah, that's the great puzzle!"

This excerpt is indicative of Jack's future journey from stability to lunacy in the episode. It also speaks to the grander mythology of the show: how have the Oceanic Six changed now that they are off the island? What in the world is their purpose now?

Smoke Signals Jack's smoke detector might be a little noisy, but it's not necessarily defective. Was the alarm warning Jack that Christian Shephard was lurking nearby? Is the smoke detector a heavy-handed hint that the apparition is related to a certain island-friendly smoke monster? In the words of Mr. Eko, do not mistake coincidence for fate...

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Fall of the French The island just got a little less crazy and a little less French. We bid au revoir to Danielle Rousseau this week, as we now have irrefutable and rapidly decaying evidence of her demise. Here's hoping that the talented Mira Furlan will return one day to reprise her role as the mysterious French woman.

Daniel's List Step aside, Jacob! You're not the only one on the island with a list. When Charlotte, Daniel and the Kwons enter the Staff Station, Daniel wonders aloud where the station gets its power. Charlotte replies, "Add that one to the list, Dan." Does Professor Faraday have a legitimate list of questions and answers about the island's mysteries? If so, how do we break down the fourth wall and force him to answer our freaking questions??

Something to Offend the Gods "The day before we're all supposed to be rescued, the person that we count on the most suddenly comes down with a life-threatening condition, and you're chalking it up to bad luck?" Well put, Rose. And who, other than Locke, would know better about the island's mysterious healing properties? People don't get sick on the island, they get better. Not so for Doctor Jack. It appears that the island is making a last ditch plea for Jack to stay, and although he does eventually find rescue, the spinal surgeon will come to regret his decision some years later. Why does the island so desperately need Jack Shephard?

Raised by Another Dead but not gone, Charlie Pace once again spoke from beyond the grave to deliver a message, this time for Jack. "You're not supposed to raise him," he warns. His words are hauntingly familiar to those of Australian psychic Richard Malkin, who once told Claire that her baby could not be raised by anyone other than her. Is the island calling for baby Aaron to return to his mother? Will the whole world succumb to massive electromagnetic implosion if they do not reunite?
The Good Shephard Even though he has left this mortal coil, Christian Shephard continues to play a key role in the mythology of Lost. He has appeared as a harmless apparition before, namely in the Season One episode "The White Rabbit." He has become a more important character in the past year, beginning with the mysterious "So It Begins" mobisode that aired this summer. Several Lost fanatics also noticed that Christian appeared in Jacob's cabin in Season Four premiere episode "The Beginning of the End." With this week's episode, the significance of the Shephard family continues to grow. Not only is Jack's significance to the island expanding, but Claire's is as well. Her disappearance with Christian is sure to lead viewers down a very interesting path. Only time will tell how Christian Shephard and his children will fit into the grand design of Lost, but all signs say that this is a story-line to keep a close eye on.

A Favor for Sawyer According to Jack, James "Sawyer" Ford made the choice to remain on the island rather than be rescued. What reason could he have for staying behind? Kate is doing a favor for Sawyer, but if we are to believe that it is August 2007, why has it taken her so long to fulfill her word? Are they still in communication some how? Is Kate making conjugal visits to Sawyer on the island? No wonder Jack is pissed!

NEXT TIME...
Sayid and Desmond make a break for it, Locke gets a glimpse into his destiny on his way to see Jacob and Ben warns him that "there are consequences to being chosen..."

If Lost columnist Josh Wigler flash forwarded to the future and found himself knocking boots with Evangeline Lilly, he would not be popping crazy pills... he'd be popping something else...viagra. He's impotent.

Lost is broadcasted by ABC on Thursday nights at 10:00 PM EST. The next episode, "Cabin Fever," airs on Thursday, May 8, at 10:00 PM EST.
