The 'Marvel Zombies' cover artists chats with Wizard during his time at WWLA

[WWLA] A FEW MINUTES WITH...ARTHUR SUYDAM!How are you enjoying the convention so far? Having a good time?
Yeah. It’s a good show. It’s my first time here. Good to be in LA, and I particularly like the Wizard shows.

Out of all the covers you’ve done, what has been your personal favorite?
Personal favorite? Zombie or regular?

How about both.
Probably my favorite cover I’ve done so far is the Savages Tales issue #5 wrap around cover. And the zombies cover… it’s usually whichever one I’m working on at the time is my favorite until I start to work on the next one.

You get impassioned about it so you put as much effort into it?
Pretty much so. I get very attached to it and then I start the next one, and I refocus.

Do you have anything else coming up?
Yeah, I’m working fulltime on Moon Knight covers for the series. I’m really enjoying working on that series. And they’re offering me Punisher right now, so I’ll be taking over that series. I’m really looking forward to that.

What do you like about those two characters—Moon Knight and Punisher?
Well, Moon Knight is dark and spooky, so anything that’s kind of dark and spooky I really like. In regards to the Punisher, that’s something I could do a 1930s, 1920s pulp type approach to that particular character. I like that these are not your typical superhero guys. They’re more adult characters, so I do like that.

If Marvel were to do another themed series of covers, what theme would you like to do?
I like everything that is a themed type. What else would I like to work on? I’d like to continue working on the Marvel Zombies. I think it’s a great series and a good thing. So, I’ll keep on doing it as long as the writing is good and the art is good. I think that series should be an ongoing thing.

You did the DC Crisis on Infinite Earth issue #7 zombie cover for Wizard Magazine. Is there any DC series you’d like to work on?
I’d love to write and do covers for a Batman zombie miniseries. That’s something I would like to do, if I were to do something for DC.

That would definitely extremely awesome to see.
Also, I have my own zombie miniseries that I started on about 10 years ago. It precedes all this stuff. It’s almost done, and that’s due in May for Dynamic Forces. So that should be coming out June or July. That one I did write and draw all the interiors and painted all the interiors. It’s called Skin Deep.

I like the title.
It says so much in so few words. [Laughs]
