2. SARAH CONNOR (The Terminator, 1984)
In The Terminator, Sarah Connor is a typical waitress with no great ambitions. Giving birth to a future savior of mankind and knowing that he’ll always be in danger, however, does funny things to a lady. Between the first two movies, Sarah turned herself into as much of a killing machine as Ah-nuld ever was, all in the name of protecting that which she held most dear: her only son.

1. BUFFY SUMMERS (Buffy the Vampire Slayer [TV show], 1997)
Forget the movie version with Luke Perry. We’re talking about the inimitable Sarah Michelle Gellar as the vampire hunter in the seven season-spanning television series. Born a "Chosen One" with the skill to fight bloodsuckers, over time Buffy transformed herself from a vapid, self-absorbed cheerleader into a self-sacrificing heroine who faced the darkest of forces. Honing her mystic skills passed on to her from generations of Slayers—strength, agility, healing and the ability to sense the presence of demons—Buffy has battled throngs of various villains, killed her vampire lover for the greater good and has even returned from the dead. But through it all, Buffy’s greatest attributes have been her inner strength and her endlessly loyal friends. And if that doesn’t kick ass, then we don’t know what does.
