CARMEN WRIGHT WINS CANADA'S COMIC CREATION NATION

Wright's comic 'Rip Current' to be published online with help from Zero 2 Hero artists and editors
Posted 03/12/08
Vancouver, British Columbia (March 2008) – After a month of voting on Canada Comic Creation Nation, the fans have crowned writer Carmen Wright as their latest winner. Wright’s pitch 'Rip Current' stood out amongst all of the competition and is now in the process of being put into production. The first issue of 'Rip Current' will be produced and published online by Zeros 2 Heroes Media. Carmen Wright will be working with comic book editors and artists provided by Zeros 2 Heroes to bring 'Rip Current' to life on the page.

"The publication of 'Rip Current' will demonstrate that I can successfully tackle graphic novels and comics, which traditional publishers seem to be clamouring about these days. I’m excited to see what doors Rip Current opens,” says Wright on the excitement around her pitch.

'Rip Current' takes place in the future where the majority of the world is covered in water. All appears peaceful with main character Lucia and her water crops, but her world is about to change as a trio of women appear claiming to be the leaders of an underwater civilization hunting a criminal who has escaped to the surface. Carmen Wright will now work with Zeros 2 Heroes comic editors and artists to produce her very first comic that will be published online by Zeros 2 Heroes Media. As part of the agreement, Zeros 2 Heroes Media not only produces Wright’s very first book, but they will be working to get fan and media driven publicity from Wright’s hometown of Coquitlam British Columbia.

“Most big publishers are not going to read cold submissions, but they will read smaller press comics. In fact, many of the big publishers do their writer scouting from indie books,” says Zeros 2 Heroes Editor-in Chief Paul Dini.

Zeros 2 Heroes Media will be providing Wright with her own online publication as well as putting together a plan to help get the word out to various media sources. The intention is to have not only a piece of professional work for her portfolio, but also to help her launch a professional writing career.

“Fans know what a good story is and where it can go so we trust them to decide what ideas we should invest in. Carmen’s talent and creativity shined brightly in her pitch and I have no doubt that the fans made a great decision to see Rip Current go into production,” says Zeroes 2 Heroes Media Chairman Paul Gertz.

“This cross-platform entertainment opportunity is exactly what we’re looking for in terms of our corporate mandate,” says Western Region Director Earl Hong Tai of Telefilm Canada. Telefilm Canada plays in integral part in the development of Canadian writers and artists and helping pitches come to life with Canada Comic Creation Nation is another way for them to lend a hand.

Zeros 2 Heroes plans to award all Canada Comic Creation Nation winners with a published online comic. All creators are encouraged to pitch their ideas online in order to let the fans decide what they would like to see. As the contest continues, members of the Zeros 2 Heroes community will rate, review and ultimately choose one winner for every month.
